Our bedrooms are places of respite and relaxation, so it's no surprise that minimalist bedrooms have been trending for several years now. While you may picture stark, all-white spaces with sparse furnishings, the style goes beyond this. People have embraced minimalism and added their own personal touches, whether that's a bohemian twist or statement art. This style is especially great for keeping small bedrooms from looking cluttered.

Minimalism as a design concept is often jumbled along with terms like modern and contemporary, but there are differences between all three. A minimalist space focuses on function and religiously follows the phrase "less is more." This doesn't mean that decorative styles can't be woven into the mix though, and a minimalist room can have a retro flair or traditional vibe, and vice versa. While neutral colors are typically used in these bedrooms, adding punches of bright or deep color to the palette can add visual interest.

When it comes to minimalism in general, it's more of a mindset or a lifestyle. The main purpose is to rid your spaces and life of unnecessary stuff. Decluttering your space is the first step in creating a minimalist bedroom. A good place to start is with your closet. Whittle it down to your favorite items and donate anything you've sworn you'll wear but haven't gotten around to.

Then pare down the rest of your belongings. Old posters, random poufs and objects you're no longer interested in don't deserve to take up space in your bedroom. Strip away as much as possible until you're left with a clean foundation that's usable and stylish but completely rid of excess. While yes, the furniture and decor are also important, a commitment to cleaning and organizing your bedroom are critical to maintaining this style.

Below, our favorite examples of minimalist bedrooms to get you started. Next up is transforming your living room, bathrooms and rest of your house into minimalist retreats.

1. Afro-Minimalist

Embracing minimalism doesn't mean you can't work the things you love into your space. Folasade and Noah's connection to Africa is showcased in their simple Harlem bedroom.

2. Light & Bright

Between the light wood furniture and white bedding and walls, this bedroom is a serene oasis. That doesn't mean it's boring though. We love the floating shelf with décor and the throw pillow.

3. Sunny & Simple

This sunny bedroom is filled with IKEA finds, such as the bed and lamp. We're especially digging the art on the headboard.

4. Bright Bedroom and Office Blend

A slim white desk placed at the end of a clean-lined platform bed creates a chic bedroom workspace, like seen in this cool Texas loft.

5. Sun-Soaked Minimalist Bedroom

This light-filled bedroom in Minnesota is made cozier with personal touches like the macramé hanging, hats and artwork. A few simple pieces like this can easily help warm up a minimalist space.

6. Utilitarian-Style

Finding equilibrium in a minimalist bedroom can be the difference between it feeling cold and stylishly lived-in. The iron accents and bare bones chair in this Brooklyn bedroom are balanced out with the soft curves and lines of the lamp and plants. Book spines also add a cheery pop of color to the space.

7. Boho-Minimalist

We love how boho style is combined with minimalism in this San Francisco bedroom. From the macramé wall hanging to the pom-pom comforter, we can't get enough.

8. Accent Wall

For all the color rebels, this Scandi-inspired Australian bedroom serves as a perfect example of a minimalist bedroom that still makes a statement. The white bed and walls are punctuated by the black accent wall, bedside tables and pendant lighting.

9. Crisp and Clean All-White Bedroom

Small touches can make a surprisingly big impact. A pair of black cord lights suspended from the ceiling and a wooden bed frame, as seen here in Robyn and Sam's home tour, make this bedroom look minimal and chic—but not unfinished.

10. Rustic Wooden Beams

The exposed wooden beams are statement enough in this bedroom in an 18th-century Dutch warehouse. A bed, nightstand and woven chair are just the right amount of furnishings to keep things minimal.

11. All About the Symmetry

The floating nightstands, pillows, hats and even windows line up beautifully in this Austin home. The symmetry really pulls everything together here. Just don't overdo it.

12. Cozy Bedroom With Black Accents

All the black accents in this Arizona vacation home prove that even the darkest shades can add interest to minimalist rooms. This bedroom has just the right amount of color and pattern without stepping into maximalist territory.

13. All About the Décor

Personalized artwork and comfy textiles take this British Columbia home's bedroom to a chic new level. Different shapes of furniture and well curated accent pieces can really help pull a minimalist room together.

14. Just the Essentials

Boasting a stripped wooden bed frame and a simple bedside table, this room is the textbook definition of minimalism. The room is based on function, save for a few personalized accents like the throw blanket, plants and wall hanging—and it's hard to believe this space is in a houseboat.

15. Color-Splashed Minimalist Bedroom

Teal isn't a color you'd ever expect to see in a minimalist bedroom. But in this Dutch home, the proof of minimalism is in the lack of excess items. If the structure of the rest of your room is simple, you can definitely find a way to make color work.

16. Ultra Clean and Personalized

White bedrooms can all begin to look the same after a while, which is why adding personalized décor is a great idea. The different bedside tables and framed artwork add character to this minimal Washington DC bedroom, making it charmingly unique.

17. Grounded & Natural

Adriana Sierra's home tour features an unfinished piece of wood as a headboard, which comes off cool and minimal. The plant and orange marble flooring also add to the nature-inspired feel of the room.

18. Geometric

It's all about making an impact with a small number of decorative items when you're working with a streamlined room, so make them count. This bedroom in a chic Australian home may be simple, but the architectural light fixture and oversize art really stand out.

19. Cozy All-White Space

Bold prints and textures can work well in a minimalist bedroom. The clean, graphic styles in neutral tones, as seen on the throw pillow and wall hanging, can quickly pep up a monochrome bedroom. The color palette and shapes hint at a nautical theme, but the space remains clean and calm in this Michigan home.

20. A Pop of Neon

The white neon sign in this Austin bedroom goes to show that you don't have to use color to make a statement. It's this—and the teal pillow—that steer this room away from feeling sterile.

21. Natural Patterns

Abstract prints and subdued patterns can easily find their place in minimalist bedroom, as they instantly breathe life into an all-white space, which you can see in this Seattle home. Select a few of your favorites, but keep the number of patterns low and the palette subdued and consistent, so you don't accidentally veer into maximalist territory.

22. Tasteful and Chic

This gorgeous bedroom in a Scandi-boho home keeps its furniture and essential items in the same color family. The lack of bright hues and excessive décor makes for a serene space that any minimalist would adore.

23. Just the Essentials

Rustic but not bare, this simple bedroom featured in a renovated textile factory strictly adheres to the guidelines of minimalism without sacrificing style. It's a lesson in understanding what you truly need for a comfortable bedroom and what you don't.
