Copy and paste between drawings in AutoCAD shows different content

By:

Support

Issue:

When copying/pasting geometry content or inserting a block from one drawing to another in AutoCAD, one of the following occurs:

  • Pasted content looks different from the original file.
  • Not all pasted content appears.
  • A different block is pasted into the drawing.
  • An older version of a block is pasted into the drawing.
  • The block appears incorrect, unlike its definition in the source file.

Causes:

The following are possible causes of the issue:

  • Copying and pasting between drawings will not replace existing defined content.
    • Blocks with the same name are defined differently in each drawing. Pasting into a file where the same block name exists uses the existing definition, essentially dropping out what is in the clipboard and inserting the block as it already is in the target file.
    • Differing layer settings. Same behavior. Layers will not be replaced if they are already present.
  • File corruption.
  • Copied content contains an external reference that is not pathed in one drawing.
  • Copied content was on layers that are frozen or turned off in the drawing.

Solution:

To preserve the copied content, do one of the following:

  • Rename blocks. Rename either the old or new block before copying between drawings.
  1. EnterRENAME.
  2. In Named Objects, select Blocks.
  3. Select either the old or new block to be renamed and fill the Rename To section.
  4. Click Rename To.
  5. Click OK.

Note: if the block instance contains nested blocks, they might need to be renamed as well.

Or try the following Procedure:

  1. Optimize both main and host drawings before copying and pasting per : Optimizing drawing files in AutoCAD with Purge, Audit & Recover.
  2. Make sure units match in both drawing. Type UNITS to check.
  3. In the main drawing with the objects that will be copied over, type UCS and set it World.
    1. Type Plan > World. This should show PLAN view with no rotation or previous custom UCS.
    2. Select object > Copy with a base point (CTRL + SHIFT + C).
    3. Enter 0,0,0 > Press Enter.
  4. In host drawing, paste with a base point (CTRL + SHIFT + V).
    1. Make sure UCS is set to world. See previous step.
    2. Enter 0,0,0 > Press Enter.
    3. BURST or EXPLODE block.
    4. To check if your are missing objects or if things do not align, XREF main drawing into host drawing per: To Work With Attaching and Detaching Referenced Drawings.

If COGO points are other items are not showing up, try the following:

  1.  LandXML Civil 3D objects from the main drawing into the host drawing: About LandXML Import and Export.
  2. Test copying and pasting the objects to a clean drawing from the default templates (C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\C3D 20XX\enu\Template). If the operation works here but not in your drawing, then repair/rebuild the drawing per: How to repair Civil 3D drawing which shows bad behavior.
